Although the way in which those character moments play out is, as I mentioned earlier, fairly formulaic. The best part of the film is the Breakfast Club-esque relationship between our four protagonists, who each have a small character arch as they learn to rely on each other to survive the game. There's a lot of ways in which the film is competently done, but it's done exclusively by the book. Overall, this is a really decent family film that has some mild action, mild humor, and a simple, straightforward story. Yes, there is some low-brow comedy, which isn't out of place in a film like this, but it's not overtly offensive. It refuses to go after the truly cheap humor that you'd cringe at in a theater. And that sort of why the film is so much better than it should be. I was thinking it was going to be a pop-culture reference fest, but it wasn't. When four teenagers in detention discover an old video game console with a game they've never heard of, they are immediately thrust into the game's jungle setting, into the bodies of their avatars.
